What is time?

Time is fundamental to understanding both the universe and our existence as sentient creatures who are cognizant of the past, present and future? But what is time? Does it even exist? If so is it universal or purely relative? Is it fundamental or merely an emergent property, or is it just a product and instrument of our cognition to better navigate our surroundings that has no external, objective existence. Einstein’s theory of relativity postulates that gravity is a curvature of space and subsequently time is relative in an overall manifold suture of space-time. Quantum mechanics poses different issues for time due to the superposition and entanglement of particles as well as the utilisation of probabilities instead of determinism. On the other hand, the arrow of time is the “one-way direction” or “asymmetry” of time. The thermodynamic arrow of time is provided by the second law of thermodynamics, which says that in an isolated system, entropy tends to increase over time. There appears to be a disconnect regarding the overall structural and conceptual framework of time. So what is time?
